SR. Backend Developer, Microservices

This is your opportunity to become a key member of a venture-backed, NASA award-winning team that is going from space startup to high-growth company. SkyWatch’s office is located at Communitech, the hub of the great startup ecosystem that is Kitchener-Waterloo.

Your role will involve development of the SkyWatch API, which will power the much-anticipated, new platform for accessing the world’s satellite data. You will play a lead role in feature development from ideation, to design, to development, to deployment, and user testing.

You must be passionate about startups and enjoy the intricacies of making one successful. You equate our success with your own and vice versa.


  • Lead the design and development of event driven microservices that power our application backend, REST API, and its underlying foundations in key business domains

  • Solicit requirements, provide feedback, design and implement new features, and promote the ongoing adoption of existing microservices throughout the organization

  • Serve as a key contributor to the platform development roadmap, providing new solutions, processes, and optimizations to the team

Skills and Experience


  • You have experience leading technical teams or serving as a platform architect for backend systems

  • You have expertise in multiple backend programming languages

  • You have built at least one high performance REST API

  • You have experience building and developing within a microservices architecture

  • You have familiarity with databases and managing large datasets

  • You have knowledge of cloud based deployments on AWS, GCE

  • You have knowledge of containerization (Docker) and/or Orchestration (Kubernetes)

  • You know the backend stack like you know your credit card PIN (hopefully very well).

Bonus Points

  • Knowledge in geospatial information systems and/or physics.

  • You have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral

  • You're a proficient organizer with an uncanny ability to multitask and meet deadlines

  • You're a critical thinker with excellent decision-making skills
